Wondered what famous entrepreneurs Warren Buffett, George Lucas, Donald Trump, and others have to say about college?

Famous entrepreneurs are usual people who have been successful, the obvious, yet they are asked about how they have been in school, college and university. The answer is used to justify one or the opposite view. It usually goes both ways.

The interesting part, most of the famous entrepreneurs are usual not good performer in the educational system or do not take it all that serious. Still they do very often outstanding things in business.

A post on youngentrepreneur, called “What Do Famous Entrepreneurs Think Of College?” inspired this post and here are two quotes from the post:

“We go to school to learn to work hard for money. I write books and create products that teach people how to have money work hard for them.” – Robert Kiyosaki (Rich Dad)

“I learned a lot about discipline and about channeling my aggression into achievement. I decided that as long as I had to be in college, I might as well test myself against the best. Always look out for yourself.” – Donald Trump

All the quotes have been made by real famous entrepreneurs, but more interesting have been the comments on this post. Here is a taste of two of the many comments found on that page.

“Curt is right. The people that were quoted are all exceptionally intelligent, and not everyone can not go to school or drop out and have the creativity, desire, intellect, or competency to make things happen. Plus, at least for me, college is about learning not only things in class, but also what I refer to as what I learn in “dorm 101″…surrounding yourselves with other students. It grows you incredibly, its a breeding ground for good ideas.” – Peter

“Yes definitely, education has its own benefits, one should keep upgrading his skills to the best levels.” – Naresh Kumar

  1. Keep posting stuff like this i really like it.

  2. Entrepreneurship in college seems to be booming. Students saw the dot.com boom go bust, but have remained optimistic. These failures have actually encouraged students to see entrepreneurship as viable. Students used to think they’d start a business some years after graduation, but many are now entertaining this idea well before they pick up their diplomas.

Some well-known entrepreneurs who started their businesses while in college include Bill Gates (Microsoft), Michael Dell (Dell computers), and Mark Zuckerberg (Facebook). Entrepreneurs are, by and large, risk-takers. College students are prone to take risks because they are usually unencumbered by family and financial obligations. They have grown up with technology and their skills lend themselves too many tech-based businesses.

Business ideas are often stimulated in the rich intellectual atmosphere of a college campus. Professorial advice is freely available and a market of eager, young consumers is at the fingertips of the college entrepreneur. A college campus is also a great incubator for student businesses because of the pool of students hungry to work. Students also have access to online databases for researching businesses. Influential people and possible investors may also be more open to being approached by a college student than they would be to others.

  3. hich sparked a debate but molimar’s post got me thinking what do famous entrepreneurs think of college? I pulled some comments from some of the world’s most successful entrepreneurs and how they viewed the college experience:

  4. Entreprenuer or salary? An education will take you further in both arenas, that is the bottom line.

  5. Salary or Work for yourself? The question lies in the hands of education you have. If you do not have an education, you are in for a harder road no matter what arena you choose.

  6. I don’t think Robert Kiyosaki and Donald Trump tell people that an education is useless. In fact, they both have extensive educational backgrounds. However, there is a difference in self-education and education that one received through a private or public institution. The fact of the matter is that educational institutions don’t teach people who to be employers, they teach s how to be employees. As Jim Rohn, foremost business philosopher says, “An education will make you a living. Self-education let’s you design a life”. Great article!
