1. spotting a trend and anticipating thier impact on peoples lives (eg: mobile phones)
2. noticing something that is missing from a market or that can be improved on (eg: online holiday bookings)
3. copying ideas from other countries (eg: car valeting)
4. taking a scientific approach ( eg: dyson’s cyclonic cleaaner)

1. brainstorming
2. personal / business experience
