Mr. Hayek, who turned 82 in February was the most colorful entrepreneur in Switzerland. He is widely credited for the rescue and resurrection of Swiss precision timekeeping watch making. Mr Hayek insisted Swiss watchmaking can survive against the intense pressure of Far East, mainly cheap Japanese watches. Under his leadership the makers of Omega, Longines and Tissot, merged into SMH, in which Hayek bought a 51 per cent share in 1984.

He introduced plastic cases, quartz movements and mass-production, charging a premium for top-of-the-range timepieces ‘Made in Switzerland’ to produce the wrist watch – the SWATCH.

The colorful Swatch wristwatch became popular around the world and By 1992 the company had produced 100 million Swatches and in 1998 SMH renamed itself to Swatch Group.

In 2003 Mr Hayek stepped down from the role of CEO of the Swatch Group, handing over to his son Nick Hayek and to take on the role as chairman of the group and head of Breguet.

Today the Swatch Group is a healthy company, well on its track for a record year, with sales expected at more than 6 billion Swiss francs ($5.5 billion).
