Many new Small Businesses fail during the early years and one of the reasons attributed for the failure is their inability to beat the competition.

To be successful in your business and to be acknowledged as a successful small business entrepreneur, you have to adopt certain strategies that will enable you to outsmart your competitors and beat them. 1. Go Shopping Yourself:

If you are a manufacturer of certain products, you should go shopping yourself at least once a fortnight. By doing this you will be able to see how and where these products are being displayed, the price at which your competitors are selling their products and the type of packaging used. In fact purchasing of your competitors products on regular basis, testing them and comparing them with your products will be a very useful and productive exercise.2. Become a member of a Professional Association:

As an entrepreneur it is very important that you become a member of a professional association related to your business or industry. Never, ever think that you can operate in a vacuum and succeed. By regularly attending their meetings, you will get the opportunity of meeting like minded people and your competitors too. Opportunities for gathering vital information and secrets abound in such meetings. Be watchful, grab them and implement them in your small business. 3. Gather Information about Your Competition:

So Mervyn King, the Governor of the Bank of England has pronounced the ‘nice’ decade over. Apparently we can now look forward to global trading uncertainty, the spiralling prices of natural resources, increases in home repossessions, and the massive restriction of credit.

Meanwhile politicians on both sides of the pond seem to be nasal gazing, wondering about their own individual political futures.

Is all this worrying you?

The neurotic will point out that the complete collapse of world economics is the least of our problems as we’re all going to be blown up by terrorists in any case. Of course if that doomsday scenario doesn’t hold true then the storms, tsunamis, droughts, plagues or famines that we’re all promised will certainly get you.

So against this less than cheery backdrop, is anybody going to believe that right now is a great time to be starting, or building, a business as an entrepreneur?

Raise your hand if you’re heard these snippets of wisdom before: you should always dress for success; you only get one chance to make a first impression; and of course the ever-popular: you can’t judge a book by its cover.

Megan graduated from Auburn University with a degree in Civil Engineering and went to work for the construction arm of chevron in her early twenties, until a few years later with an experience with a business coach lit the fire of entrepreneurship in her own furnace. Within a short time Megan, who is from the small town of Union Grove, was back in Alabama seeking the right business opportunity for her. To make a long story short, Megan purchased the BNI franchise for North Alabama at the age of 28 and formally launched her career as an entrepreneur. BNI is a networking organization that serves to bring entrepreneurs from all industries. You would never suspect it by looking at her now, but there is a couple of things that you should know about Megan before we continue: Megan grew up a self-professed tomboy and started her business after years in the construction industry, so her standard manner of dress was khaki pants and button down skirts. She didn’t mention steel-toed work boots, so I’ll leave her footwear to your imagination. By her own words, her hair was “long, straight, and air-dried” and she wasn’t a big user of makeup. So when she started attending  networking functions and chamber mixers to promote her business she noticed that she wasn’t getting the warm response from other entrepreneurs that she expected.
