I suggest that you make your own search on this one. Definitely, every page online is a good candidate for your own ads. The only difference is that you have to draw your own preferences.
The following are your choices of places for good advertisement:
1. Websites that compliment your product/service
2. Of course search engines and directories
3. Community websites like friendster, mspace, etc....
4. High traffic sites
5. Forums and chat rooms
6. Even emails can be a good place for ads
There you go.

If you are in the service industry...read on else I apologise.
Do you have a customer who can recommend your business? If so get on this newly launched site called http://www.servicedomino.com. Its a site for small businesses to promote themselves.
With the different categories there...you benefit from the already available traffic.
Also as the database grows...you get traffic directed to your listing and category....as customers look for recommended businesses. Recommendations are the best form of ads arent they?
The basic listing is free as long as you are recommended by a customer. You get a subdomain free
e.g: http://josed.servicedomino.comhttp://spiritmassage.servicedomino.com
Let your customers drive your PR engine. If you saw a service on a third party website with recommendations from customers...you would prefer that to something you pull out of a classifieds wouldnt you? Also a customer who puts in a written recommendation is more likely to remember your services in the future too.

The best place to advertise is where your target audience gathers and are most likely reached. Advertising on a high traffic website is less likely to give you results if your target audience is not going in there.
The key is to carefully monitor your return on investment -- whether you are advertising in blogs, chats, videos, etc. -- what is the result of your spending? Are you getting customers, are you getting traffic?
Videos are attracting a lot of buzz with YouTube and others, but advertising on videos and even such sites is still in infancy. People flock to YouTube to watch videos, not to read ads.
Same with chats -- people go to chatrooms to chat, not to click on ads. If you are going to run banner ad campaigns for example paid per 1000 impression, you will find yourself spending so much for very little clickthrough
Make a list of places where your target market goes. Then explore how to get a presence on these sites.
However, if you want free, low cost and effective ways to get the word out about your business, you may want to consider the following strategies:
Send out press releases. While outfits charge as much as $650 per release, there are free press release submission places on the Web. Press releases allow you to (a) attract media attention; (b) get more back links to your website without sending each website an email request; and (c) get more visibility especially if your press release gets in Google News or Yahoo News. http://www.prleap.com/sign_up.htmlhttp://i-newswire.com/http://www.24-7pressrelease.com/http://www.pressbox.co.uk/cgi-bin/links/...http://www.pr.com/press-releaseshttp://www.prfree.com/http://www.clickpress.com/releases/index...http://www.theopenpress.com/http://www.przoom.com/http://www.prweb.comhttp://www.newswiretoday.com/http://www.free-press-release.com/
5. Submit articles. Write articles and submit them to websites accepting author submissions. You get exposure for your business; establishes you as an authority in your field, and allows you to get backlinks for your website. If 50 websites publish your article and it contains a link back to your website, then you easily get 50 links from a single article. The more links you have, the greater your chances for increasing your search engine rankings.
Here is a comprehensive list of where to submit your articles http://answers.yahoo.com/question/;_ylt=...
Post a link to your site for free where it is allowed (always read the Terms of Use). Examples are:
Craigslist http://www.craigslist.com
Google Base http://base.google.com
Classifieds for Free http://www.classifiedsforfree.com/...
Text Link Exchange http://www.txtswap.com/
Recycler.com http://www.recycler.com/
Yahoo Classifieds http://classifieds.yahoo.com/
US Free Ads http://www.usfreeads.com/
If you have a website, rank well in the search engines (organic search results, not the pay per click). SEs can be a big source of traffic. The key is to create the best content in your niche. If you have good content, other websites will gladly link to you and offer your site as a resource to their audience. Check the on-page factors and be sure to get linked from authority sites in your topic area.
